Choquequirao mountain bike trails and trekking Peru – Cusco

The archaeological site of Choquequirao is built on the slopes of the Andes mountains at 3,100 m. All routes or paths to get to this place are done on foot, but we explored a new route for mountain biking and hiking.

Our mountain bike expedition is considered enduro type, the roads we cross are trails or old bridle paths.

What are the landscapes like on this mountain bike to Choquequirao?

From the place where we started cycling, we have an incredible view of the sunrise and below an impressive cushion of clouds.

The most exciting panoramic view of the Andes mountain range and the Apurímac canyon.

Climate change is quite noticeable, because we started from 4,000m. dry climate and we descended to 2,380m. warm climate, jungle eyebrow.

We were also able to see animals such as horses, cows and very traditional houses of each town we crossed.

What is the starting point of this new trails to Choquequirao?

The route begins from the Chaquicachayoc pass (4,000m.) towards the town of Tambobamba, a very charming place to rest for one or two nights.

In this town is the Tambo colonial house, a building built in the Spanish style, with arches and wide walls, a site that is in complete abandonment.

The place is surrounded by a very charming green valley with a warm climate at an altitude of 2,380 m.

How many km? Do you have the MTB trail to Choquequirao?

The distance approx. This route is 19km. with sections of climbs, descents along short paths and wide paths.

We categorize this route as enduro type, because the trails have a positive gradient of 462 m. and we consider that it is advanced due to the height at which it is located.

How far is the trekking to Choquequirao?

The hikking begins from the last camp, known as San Ignacio, from this place to Choquequirao it is 12 km. back and forth.

The path of this route is considered demanding, because the entire journey is uphill until reaching Choquequirao.

We do not recommend people who suffer from vertigo because some sections are short roads and there are many curves to follow.

What level of MTB technique is required for this adventure?

The MTB route to Tambobamba is of an advanced level, it has sections of curves, verticals, rocks, some sections of the trails are very short.

To do this 3-day expedition you need to be prepared both mentally and physically.

You have to have mtb experience of more than 3 years and have done similar trails.

What level of physical condition is necessary?

The physical condition required for biking and hikking is of an advanced level, because Choquequirao is located in the Andes of Peru and this trail starts at 4,000m.

The route to Choquequirao is an activity for experienced cyclists and hikers, because all access to the Inca ruins requires a lot of physical condition, especially this new route of only 3 days.

The landscapes of this place are extremely beautiful with a dry to hot climate.
