Tipon archaeological inca site by mountain bike trail Cusco
Pachatusan Mountain is another of the sacred mountains that is located at 5,000m. Near the city of Cusco, our route begins exactly from this place towards the Inca ruins of Tipon.
Tipon
Exactly Tipon is an archaeological site built by the pre-Inca culture, where the great engineering capacity in water conduction is shown for its immense terraces or terraces to grow various products such as corn, potatoes and many other products.
Location
This archaeological site is located south of the city at an elevation of 3,500m. and 30 minutes away by car.
Customs since Inca times
One of the well-known customs in Cusco is to ask permission when you have to cross a sacred mountain (apu pachatusan).
The first person or the guide carries some coca leaves and some sweet ingredients to offer to the mountain and ask for free passage so that nothing bad happens along the way.
Throughout the history of the Inca culture, they make us understand that they respect the space where they lived, as well as the water, the rivers, mountains, lagoons, snow-capped mountains and animals.

What category of mountain bike is considered Tipon?
Based on our experience, this trail is considered in two categories:
Enduro; we consider it an enduro trail with small uphills and downhills that connects to an Inca trails, a road that is still used by the local people to get to their homes.
Downhill; on the route, there are very fun sections of horse trails with steps, very exciting curves.
In this cycling activity, there are also small sections where you have to push the bike.
What type of bike is recommended for Tipon?
A full suspension mountain bike is recommended for comfortable descents on trails such as rock gardens, steps, and curves.
An electric full suspension bike would be the best option to fully enjoy an e-bike, as it can be challenging to pedal at 4,000m with a regular bike.
Is it recommended to go independently?
Honestly, we do not recommend going on your own for these simple reasons:
- In some sections, you may not be able to identify the correct path.
- You will spend more time using your Google Maps app to locate the right route.
- To reach the starting point, you will need to take a transportation, but not just any transportation; one in particular that has a rack for carrying the bicycle.
- When you reach the Inca trail, you will not find anyone to ask if you are on the right route.
- If you want to fully enjoy this mountain biking experience, we recommend going with an experienced agency that knows this trail well.
